Skorpios (Greek: Σκορπιός) is a private island in the Ionian Sea off the western coast of Greece and just to the east of the island of Lefkada.

The 2001 census reported a population of two inhabitants. Administratively it is part of the municipality of Meganisi in Lefkada Prefecture.

It is mainly known as the private island of the late Greek shipping billionaire Aristotle Onassis. It was the site of his wedding to former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy on October 20, 1968. Upon his death it passed to his daughter Christina, and then in turn to her daughter Athina Roussel. Onassis, his son Alexander, and his daughter Christina are all buried on the island.

Little is known about Athina’s relationship to her island, and she is believed to have spent very little time there. There have been rumors published that she may sell it, and stories in financial publications have placed its value at over $200 million US. On 9 August 2009, a British newspaper claimed – without any confirmation – that the island had been put up for sale by Onassis at the reported price of 100 million Euro.

Bill Gates has reportedly shown interest in the purchase of the island.

Very quiet location, our accommodation 400 meters from a pretty small pebble beach accessible per stiff path, 2,5 km of track in balcony on the sea leads to Sivota – Lefkada charming small harbour of fishermen considered for its fish restaurants (to the village: grocers, bread, fruits… from April at October); 12 km away, Vassiliki European wind surf spot, banks, poste office, all type of shops.

The vast flowered terraces (bougainvilleas, géraniums, bay-trees) shaded by vegetable pergolas with the delicate scents of jasmine and chèvrefeuille invite to the relaxation and contemplation.
The varied and abundant Mediterranean vegetation (olive-trees, carob-tree, cane-apple bushes, heathers) declines a pallet of greens being detached with harmony on deep blue water from the Ionian sea.

The extensive fishing activity and their entrapment has led to the dramatic reduce of the dolphins that live in the Ionian Sea. According to elements announced by WWF, a organization active for environment issues, the population of these dolphins in the last decade has reduced from 150 to 15 today. Most of them live around the island of Lefkada and particularly close to the small island of Kalamos, however the intense human activity provoked the destruction of their natural habitats and their death.

These dolphins belong to the species delphinus delphis, which is not a rare species around the world but it is indeed rare in the Mediterranean. The Ionian Sea is the only area in the Meditteranean bassin that this dolphin species lives. WWF Hellas and other environmental organizations ask for the application of the European and international law for illegal fishing to protect these dolphins and allow them to augment their population.

Karya is the home of the Folklore Museum which houses numerous important exhibits of needlework, for which Karya is famous.

Theodoros Katopodis built this museum, as a tribute to Maria Koutsochero, who after an accident which resulted in her losing her hand, devoted her life in needlework in and also taught the girls of the village this new technique. Today this is known as the ‘stitch of Koutsochero’. It was to exhibit the cultural tradition of the region as well as the beauty of the island of Lefkas (Lefkada)

In the Museum of Karya you will admire many works by Maria Koutsochero but also by many other people of the village who still use this unique technique. Moreover, you will admire very good handwoven materials and items from their tradition.

Outside the museum can be found traditional agricultural tools, wine presses and another traditional machine, which was used to make ‘tsipouro’, a local drink.

A comfortable holiday can only be complete with a stress free, handing over and return.
Experience the perfect blend of sun and sea, dreamy islands, full of antique and medieval monuments, and magnificent coasts.

With no point in the Ionian Sea located farther than 12 miles from a shielded harbor, the area experiences ideal weather conditions for a refreshing family sailing experience.
In summer, “Maistro”, a comfortable wind from the north-west, which is aligned with solid high-pressure weather, blows across the Ionian Sea.
Appearing in the later bit of morning, it flows at an ideal strength, not increasing 5 Beaufort, allowing you to doze off as you enjoy the sunset.

These conditions are very unlike the “Meltemi” on the Aegean Sea and include no agitation.
Since the Ionian islands are situated parallel to the continental coast, they provide good cover leeward during uneasy weather.

Meganissi paradoxically means “large island”. It covers 19.85 square kilometres and sits 4 nautical miles from the nearest port of Nidri, Lefkada. Its current population is around 1500, but has been inhabited from time immemorial.

Mentioned as far back as Homer’s times, this island has certainly seen some history. One can easily imagine the pirates and invaders that once sheltered and conspired in the caves and the bandits that hid in the lush growth amidst the olive trees.

When visitors are asked to describe Meganissi, the satellite island to Lefkada, they all say it is like taking a step back in time, unspoilt, charming and beautiful.

This miniature Greek island is within easy reach by boat and there are numerous bays to explore, some caves to snorkel in and villages to amble around.

The two main harbours of Vathi and Spilia offer safe moorings to local fishermen and sailors. Each has waterside tavernas to while away an hour or two whilst having some drinks and people watching.

Above these two harbours are the quaint villages of Katomeri and Spartohori. A labyrinth of tiny lanes and alleyways form a maze of whitewashed houses and courtyards full of tin-potted plants. A handful of churches occupy sites with the best sea views and a few tavernas offer tasty Greek meals to visitors. Although the number of residents diminishes over the winter period, those that remain find plenty to do. There are still olives to harvest, sheep and goats to milk and chickens to feed.

In bygone years these villages were the centres of activity. Everybody joined in with the olive harvest to make oil to sell and corn was grown and milled in one of the many windmills to make flour.

Nowadays, olive oil continues to be made on the island but in smaller quantities and produced by machine instead of donkeys. Flour is no longer made, so all that remains of the windmills are the round stone-built towers that balance on hilltops and capes, bereft of their sails and looking forlorn.

Lefkada has an abundant storage of underground water, which is one of the principal reasons why a major part of the island is lush with greenery. The high mountains that abound in Lefkada are the sources for many waterfalls that cascade through the mountainous terrain and finally end up into the sea.

One such gorgeous cascading waterfall is the Dimossari waterfall that can be found on the outskirts of Nydri. Its name is derived from the word “Dimos”, the ancient state where numerous watermills were found.

During the summer season, when the temperature gets really hot, tourists come to the Dimosari Waterfalls to relieve themselves from the sweltering heat and many of them can be seen swimming in the crystal clear waters of the lakes, found among the rocky contours.

The trail on foot to the waters along the silhouette of the pine trees is splendid. Very near to the Dimossari Waterfalls is the seaside village of Nydri. Ideally a visit to the Dimossari waterfalls should coincide with a visit to this picturesque Lefkada village which offers many quality hotels, restaurants and tavernas all geared up to pamper the discerning traveler

The Monastery of Asomatou Archangel Michael is located outside Vafkeri and is one of the most significant and rich monasteries of the island. The estimated founding of the monastery was in the 16th century, during the years of Turkish domination.

According to the historian K. Machera, it existed long before 1681. The first church was a little single placed room with a saddled wooden roof completed by small low roofed cells.

In 1700, during Venetian domination, the monastery had been flourishing with 19 cells, many fields and animals. The monastery’s location in a rich verdant valley, gave it a lot of economic strength.

Today the only evidence of its existence are the remaining cells, guestroom, storehouses, oil press and stables.

The catholicon of the church has important wall paintings covering all of the church’s walls, which were created from the end of the 16th century until the beginning of the 17th century. It is worthwhile to stop and admire the “Panagia Platitera”, at the edge of sanctum, and, on the top, the “Ascension of Christ”. The icon of “Akras Tapinosis” (Total Humiliation) to the edge of offertory, the “Vision Of Agios Petros” and the “Sacrifice of Avraam” also offer magnificent representations. One of the most well preserved representations with soft and warm colors is the “the miracle of Archangel Michael”, to whom the monastery is dedicated.

Tsoulakades is a pleasant enough village with some pretty houses which are symptomatic of the design on the island: notice the orange curved tiles on the roofs of the houses which are almost uniform in their design.

There are a few hotels here, although it is mostly poplated by locals’ dwellings.
A road slopes down from here to Kaminia beach which is pleasant enough and fairly unpopulated.

This beautiful village is situated on the North West coast of Lefkas, 12 km from Lefkas Town. It is the only village at sea level along the West Coast, because the coastline is so rugged and steep. The village consists of one main street down to the sea.

There are many restaurants and tavernas, and small minimarkets and souvenir shops, along the main street. There is some parking at the top of the street, but most of it is pedestrian only. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare and if you can find a place in one of the car parks it is worth paying. The village is very busy during July and August, but can be extremely quiet outside of the main season.

The surrounding area is beautiful, with steep hills and valleys covered in olive and pine trees leading down to beautiful beaches and crystal clear sea water. After a storm the white limestone sand is washed up into the sea, turning the water into striking patterned shades of light and dark blue – a photographer’s dream.

The village is also close to several superb beaches, including its own, small, nearby beach. To the North is Pefkoulia Beach (also known as Agios Nikitas Beach), which can be easily reached along the main road to Lefkas Town. Here you will find two tavernas and a few simple rooms for rent. To the South of the village is Milos Beach, named after the ruined mill on the headland overlooking it. There are two ways to reach it: the first, more difficult way, is to follow the path over the headland from the village; this starts behind the Milos Taverna on the main street, and takes about 20 minutes. It can be very rough and even dangerous in places, so be careful! The easier way, in the middle of the summer, is to take the taxi boat from the village beach, which costs a couple of Euros each way. The beach itself is one of the best on the Island, is quiet for most of the summer, and clothing restrictions are ‘relaxed’.

Lefkada is impressive even as it first greets visitors, as they cross the narrow strip of dry land and the 50-metre long floating bridge from the coast of Aitoloakarnania. The bridge turns around on itself allowing small boats to pass through the canal of Lefkada.

Gyra is one of Lefkada’s most important natural beauties. This narrow strip of white sand embraces the lagoon on the north of the island and makes the landscape quite special. Gyra begins from the point almost behind the Kastro, creating Ammoglossa (sand tongue) and reaching as far as the other side, beyond the town.

Inside the lagoon is the ‘ivari,’ where fish are bred in special, traditional wicker baskets and which grow within natural conditions. Lefkada also has a large lake that welcomes large masses of fowl and fauna every year. You will be able to admire herons, Kalimanes, swans, wild geese and ducks.
You may also be interested in checking out the Folklore museum which has many fine hand woven materials and examples of traditional clothing, among other interesting exhibits. There is an archeological museum that has ceramics and other Greek exhibits from excavations in Nudri and also sculptures, vessels and a collection of icons. The demotic library includes a collection of icons of Byzantine art from the Ionian college of the 17th, 18th and 19th century.

The library also houses old, rare books and manuscripts. The Photograhy Museum, meanwhile, has many interesting photographs and souvenirs of romantic Lefkada.

Lefkada’s sights

Lefkada’s sights include:
• Its churches (basilicas) with their unusual architecture influenced by the Venetians and their Ionian Island (post – Cretan school) wall paintings and delightful wooden carved iconostases, some of which are covered in gold leaf.
• The Archaeological Museum of Lefkada, whose collection includes finds from Early and Mid-Bronze Age graves at Nydhri, the necropolis of the ancient city of Leucas and from various other areas on the island.
• The lagoon includes one of the most remarkable wetlands in the Ionian region which is protected under the Ramsar Convention as an internationally important wetland, with an age-old fish farm. It is also home to a large number of charming bird species such as gulls, herons, swans, wild ducks, wild geese, etc.
• The Gramophone Museum is a small private museum with gramophones, records, rare everyday objects, and decorative items. It was put together by a local dedicated collector.
• The Municipal Library is housed in a neo-classical building. It has a large number of books and houses a rich collection of post-Byzantine icons primarily in the Ionian School by artists such as the Ionian Island hagiographers Doxaras, Patsaras, Roussos, etc.
• The Santa Maura castle which protected the island capital from the first decade of the 14th century to 1684 as a defense against both pirates and other enemies.
• The four windmills at Gyra (the only ones left of the orginal twelve which once stood here). Most bear Russian names such as Orloff, Metzikoff, Moscovas and up until the beginning of the 20th century ground large quantities of wheat, much of which came from Russia.
• The Haramoglios Special Lefkadiaki Library houses a collection of books and other documents either written by residents of the island or referring to issues directly related to Lefkada. This collection has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records.
• The Church of Panaghia ton Vlachernon lies amid an ash green forest of olive trees. On the last Sunday of the Orthodox Carnival, 1821, the chieftains and dignitaries of the Greek Mainland gathered there on the initiative of Ioannis Zambelios (eminent member of the ‘Filiki Etaireia’ in Lefkada). It was there that they confirmed they would participate in the national struggle for liberation and would immediately declare revolution in their areas by taking an oath on a copy of the Holy Gospel, which has survived to this day.
• Kouzubey is home to two traditional coffee shops which have survived in the shade of the centuries old olive trees, towering plane trees, and poplars. These coffee shops serve up traditional Greek fruit preserves, delicious fried potatoes, a vanilla flavoured dessert and soumada. Amid the quiet reigning over the olive grove, time comes to a standstill at these coffee shops; the pace slows down as ad hoc backgammon tournaments are organized on the small metal tables to the sound of interminable conversations.
• Faneromeni Monastery: on the lovely hill which crowns Lefkada town, lies the Monastery of Panaghia Faneromeni, the island’s patron. It is built on the site of the ancient temple of Artemis. The miraculous icon of the virgin which is housed by the monastery was made by the Athonite monk Benjamin Kontrakis in 1876 on Mount Athos.

Kathisma is located 14 kilometres west of the capital, near the village of Agios Nikitas.

Kathisma, with its long beach with fine white sand and turquoise waters surrounded by impressive cliffs, is one of the most beautiful beaches on Lefkada.
Sun beds, umbrellas and water sports facilities can be found there, as well as various accommodation options, restaurants and bars.

The sands at Kathisma are some of the most popular on Lefkas: wide and deep for more than a kilometre with pebbles and sand on the shore and sand underfoot out to the sea.

Although this beach is not blessed with much shade, it nevertheless has interesting rock promontories and caves to explore and a couple of large rocks in the sea at the southern end where nudists tend to congregate.

Kathisma beach often makes it into the top ten most beautiful Mediterranean beaches and it is easy to understand why. However, as the sand can create deep shelves, be aware that children need to be watched closely.

On the main section of the beach there are tavernas and bars with swimming pools in the bars. As it is west facing, many people linger around to enjoy the sunsets.

There are plenty of beach umbrellas and beds and the beach has a young and lively feel, with volleyball and tennis courts. In the summer and there is paragliding from the cliffs.

There is a regular bus service from Lefkas Town and plenty of parking behind the beach. Parking is in great demand at weekends when visitors arrive in droves. Fortunately, the beach is big enough for it rarely to feel too crowded.

In the year 2000 a popular magazine poll voted Kathisma one of the top 10 Greek beaches by visitors.

The view from Vafkeri village, of the shimmering sea of Nydri and Onasis’ “Scorpios” Island, is magnificent.
Here you will find a peaceful holiday spot and one of the best restaurants on the island (The Katoghi)

Egremni (Greek: Εγκρεμνή or Εγκρεμνοί) is a remote beach located on the south-western coast of the Ionian island of Lefkada.

Since the creation of a sealed road during the mid 1990s, this remote beach has become one of the premier tourist destinations on the island, and in Europe as a whole.

The beach is accessed from the car park via 347 steep steps that hug a rugged cliff face.

The waters of Egremni are strikingly clear and the sunsets are frequently dramatic. The beach is composed of fine to medium-sized, white-coloured pebbles (typical on of the Ionian islands) that are very comfortable to lie on.

Driving to Egremni takes you through a very narrow and steep road. Instead of using the beach’s car park, you can park on the right side of the road before the car park for free. However, be aware this does mean a two hundred meter uphill climb when you are leaving the beach.

Once you park, to reach the beach you have to climb down a few hundred steps and cross a *very* shaky wooden structure at the end.

Vasiliki (Greek: Βασιλική) is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island and is 40km south from the town of Lefkada.
Its bay is ideal for surfing and its island atmosphere is quite charming. From here you can visit the villages of Agios, Petros, and Sivros.

There are also opportunities to taste many traditional foods, go swimming on the beach of Vasiliki, or take the small boats for the beaches of Porto-Katsiki, Alektori and Agiofili.

The picturesque village is well-served with restaurants, small shops, and hotels, and the port supports ferries to nearby Ithaca and Cephalonia, making the town a minor centre for tourism.

Vasiliki Bay is reputed to offer excellent sailing conditions reliably from May through September and several companies take advantage of this by offering sailing and windsurfing excursions. The strong cross-shore wind is said to result from the interaction of the prevailing wind and the sea breeze. Sometime in the afternoon, heating of the hills to the east of the Bay accelerates the gentle sea breeze while turning it across the shore creating a strong, steady breeze. The Vasiliki Bay cross-shore breeze ranges between a strong breeze and a gale.

Lefkada is a definite paradise for windsurfing.

The beach of Vassiliki is one of the 10 best beaches worldwide and the third best in Europe. It covers almost all needs for windsurfing lovers.

The Ionian Sea during the summer months is “cooled” with the thermal winds (mistral). The winds, together with the morphology of the area, combine to create some of the perfect conditions to allow surfers to “take off” with new tricks and maneuvers. At midday, the thermal wind at these two beaches increases steadily until late afternoon.

In Vassiliki, this phenomenon is impressive. In the closed bay, the morning is ideal for beginners since there are almost no waves. Later, the direction of the wind changes and the sea becomes rough, making it better for experienced wind surfers.

The statistics of the beach are impressive: May- 15 days of the month, June- 20 days of the month, July- 25, August- 20, September – 15. The power of wind is about 4 to 5 bft, 6-7 and 8 bft in good days. (Not sure how you want to phrase this but maybe lay it out in point form so it’s more legible…)

Vassiliki is an ideal surfing place for slalom and freestyle. There you will find many windsurfing schools and specialized shops.

To the north side of the island, near Lefkada’s town, you can go to Aghios Giannis beach with almost the same statistics but with different conditions inside the water. Wave lovers will adore this beach. The waves are amazing for those who seek great excitement. We would also like to note that this sport can be done throughout the year, so winter months are not out of bounds.

Within a small cove of unique beauty, and just 15km from Nidri, a landscape of hills surrounds the pretty harbour of Sivota (or Syvota).
Sivota is a picturesque fishing harbour that is located 33km south of the island’s capital in a beautiful bay of the same name.
It’s an ideal place to relax and a very good stop for a boat (you have an equipped port and furnished market).
Sivota gets quite crowded during summer, especially by sailing yachts visited by flotillas of the British tour operators. A natural port provides mooring for yachts, but also offers a small shingle beach too.
Sivota is a relatively quieter place where one can enjoy locally cooked seafood. The nice little taverns that border the beach serve excellent fresh sea food. Since only a few buses thread their way down from Lefkada town each day, the best route to reach the town is to rent a car or a small motorcycle to join Sivota.

Nydri and the surrounding area of the Municipality of Ellomenos are located on the south-east side of Lefkada. It has many outstanding physical beauties, both on the coasts as well as the hinterland, which leave every visitor in awe. In this region the morphology of the earth varies.

It combines the island’s largest fertile plain, Englimenos, with the mountain ranges of Platystoma, Vakeris, Neochori, Alatros and Fternos, with the beaches and tourist resorts that are visited by thousands of holiday-makers.

The large, leeward bay of Vlychos, which extends far into the dry land, constitutes an excellent natural harbour, hospitable to all the boats that sail in the waters of the Ionian Sea.

The whole of the Vlychos peninsular is a luscious green that hugs the coast and reaches round as far as the opposite side from Nydri. And opposite, on the edge of the horizon, the coast of Akarnania on the Greek mainland, frames this unique and exquisite picture, a picture which differs during every hour of the day.

A few years ago, Nydri and its surrounding area was nothing more than a small fishing community. Most of the inhabitants lived in small, semi-mountain villages located higher up, at Rachi, Vavkeri and Platystoma, and were involved in agriculture, live-stock rearing and fishing, as were all the villagers of the island.

The rapid development of tourism gave the area a great push and won over the majority of the locals. Today, the place is very different from how it was in the past. In addition, the development of tourism also changed the demographic distribution. The residents moved from the interior mountain massifs to the coasts, where they became involved in tourism, while also continuing their winter agricultural occupations in the villages.

The whole of the coastal zone from the village of Periyiali as far as Vlychos has merged into one compact area. There are dozens of luxury hotels and rented rooms, restaurants, shops and tourist offices which offer up-to-date tourism facilities serving the most demanding visitor. The beautiful and immaculately clean sandy beach, which stretches out for kilometres ahead, provides bathers with the opportunity to try out all kinds of water sports. Even though the area is quite developed touristically, it has not lost its natural beauty.

Thick vegetation with olive trees, pines and cypresses provide a framework for the carefully constructed tourist infrastructure. The orderliness and cleanliness help to maintain exceptionally civilized surroundings. The region’s beauties are not just limited to its sandy beaches and to its cosmopolitan character. It also has many important historical, natural, as well as cultural monuments to show, both along the coast and inland.

Just after the picturesque village of Evgiros, the fully surfaced road continues 3km down to the romantic beach of Afteli, which is not very long but is also not often crowded. The only building is a villa, constructed by one occupant near the stone beach.

Owing to the fact there are no specific attractions which can lure tourists, this beach offers those in the know the opportunity to snorkel along the rocky coast, in a tranquil setting.

This small cove offers the perfect opportunity for a romantic picnic or a nice glass of wine, near crystal clear waters, away from lots of people.
We recommend this tiny paradise, but be sure to bring fresh drinks (as there are no cafes or restaurants nearby), a parasol and sun cream* for a relaxing afternoon.

*Please make sure to bring a Bio Sun Cream. The regular creams we have found in all shops contribute to destroying the bay’s ecosystem

Porto Katsiki (Greek: Πόρτο Κατσίκι) is one of the most famous beaches in Greece and Europe in general. It is 35 km away from Lefkada city near Athani village.

Porto Katsiki, translated into English, means “Port of the Goat”, due to the fact goats were previously the only things that could reach the beach.

This beach deserves to be seen and we advise coming in the early morning (before 10:00) or at the afternoon (after 18:00) during the high season or in May, June, and September when the beach is not overrun with visitors. You may also visit Porto Katsiki with the cruise boats from Nydri or Vasiliki.

The unique view of the white cliffs over the beach combined with the surrounding green of the area and the cyan water of the sea make this beach a “must visit” for tourists. Porto Katsiki has parking lots and canteens, but you will not find anywhere to stay.

Some people camp on the beach, but this is not recommended as it can be dangerous underneath the rocks. The last 5km of the road are not wide enough and especially in August you may experience difficulties visiting Porto Katsiki at noon.

Because it is so well-known, we do not recommend visiting the beach during afternoons in July and August, because it becomes overcrowded and noisy.

Access can be fairly difficult by car as there is only one, narrow road which reaches the beach from the cliffs with the last 2km becoming overcrowded with cars parking on either side of the road owing to the fact the car park charges 5 or 6 euros a day, even if you are only visiting for 1 or 2 hours. If you decide to use the car park, try to negotiate with the parking keeper to obtain a small discount.

If you visit Porto Katsiki from the south of the island, you can take a shortcut just after Pondi by turning left after the street mirror and following the little path.
